“Give folks a fish, they’ll eat for a day. Teach them to fish, and all they’ll want to do is go catch smallmouth.” –Captain Rich

New to the DC area and want to learn our waters?
In town for a work trip, and you have a free day?
Or do you just want a stress-free day on the water?
I’m Captain Rich, and I want to take you fishing.

Osprey Fishing Charters is a disabled veteran owned fishing instruction and guide service in the Washington DC area. I fish the Occoquan and Upper Potomac Rivers targeting smallmouth, largemouth, catfish, and migratory species. My goal is to provide an affordable fishing excursion that helps anglers of all skill levels experience the joys of fishing. Our area has exciting fishing opportunities and I want to share them with you.
Fishing is a great opportunity for you to bond with your family and really spend quality time. When you take your son or daughter fishing you are away from cell phones, video games, and the distractions of life. But when getting started in fishing, online how-to videos only get you so far. They can help you change a tire, but they may not be enough to get a smallmouth to tug on your line. If you don’t know how to fish but want to learn how, I want to help you. On our trips you will learn something new, catch some fish, and walk away with a great family experience. And I hope you come back and fish with me again sometime.
I provide discounted rates for military veterans. It’s my way of giving back for the sacrifices that our service members make to keep us safe at home. For more information on my veteran pricing, please email me and ask for details. Please note: I cannot provide veterans discounts if booked through a booking website. You would need to contact me directly.

The Captain
Originally from South Florida, I grew up with a fishing rod attached to the end of my arm. I have a deep love of inshore saltwater fishing, hauling drag-busting snook, redfish, and speckled seatrout out of the warm, coastal Florida backwaters. After military service, I settled in the Washington, DC area to continue my career but never lost my love of fishing. A close friend took me smallmouth fishing one day–not a fish we see in South Florida. From that moment, I was hooked on fishing the tidal and upper Potomac. It’s become my passion, and over the past few years, I’ve been sharing that passion with others.

Colleagues who knew of my love of fishing would ask me, “Hey Rich, my kids are getting old enough to fish, but I don’t know how to get started. Can you help me?” I’d take them out and teach them the basics of fishing these waters–what lures to use, what gear to buy, what knots to tie, and the effects of the water clarity, light, and temperature on fishing. After a while, a few of my fishing guests told me that I should consider doing this as a business venture. So, I pursued a captain’s license, opened up business in 2018, and began running weekend fishing trips on the Occoquan and Upper Potomac Rivers.
I am USCG licensed as an Inland 25 Ton Master and Near Shore OUPV.
I am Red Cross certified in Adult and Pediatric First Aid, CPR, and AED.
I am also unofficially licensed to provide endless eye-rolling lame, corny jokes throughout the charter.

The Boat

We’ll fish from a 20′ Rock Proof Boats “River Rocket”. It features a 200hp Mercury Optimax inboard sport jet with a tunneled hull. It can run in 8 inches of water, and it gets to the fishing grounds in a hurry. It comfortably fishes three customers–one on the bow, one in the well, and one on the back seat. The boat has a livewell, a GPS-enabled trolling motor, and a small cooler for your drinks and lunch.
